[ Fone ]

E-book in English with text and poems by Jonna Pedersen

27 pages, illustrated in colors
Cinnober Edition 2018, Copenhagen

[ Fone ] deals with the cultural change that has taken place in our way of communicating with each other, namely that text rather than speech has taken over, because it is faster, more controllable and discreet.
Pedersen is concerned about whether we reach each other and are close to each other when we communicate primarily through text. The paintings therefore include old rotary phones as cultural icons, which express a spirit of time, where telephone conversations created and maintained close relationships between people.
Together with the phones, phone-speaking characters from comics, various elements from everyday life e.g. tear from magazines and newspapers, horoscopes, old cigarette packs, parts of napkins, notes, gift-wrap and playing cards form part of the works.
The elements used represent the contemporary everyday life, and her works become a form of "time images/paintings", where she invites the viewer to remember and reflect on the significance of the elements.
The focal point of her method is transformation. She examines the transfer of expression and experience from one medium to another. First, she creates a small temporary sketch-collages of fabric, photos, plastic, other.
Next, she translates the sketch-collage into painting on canvas. She aims for the painting to appear as a collage - but without being it.
